Hurricane Harvey Relief: Ways You Can Help

Hurricane Harvey has devastated the coasts of Texas and Louisiana and most of us are looking for ways to help out. For those seeking to donate or volunteer, here are two options: First, the Houston Food Bank says their greatest need right now is for money, and they need donations designated for disaster relief. This will help them provide immediate aid, as well as support ongoing hunger relief in the months to come. You can also donate food and supplies through Saturday, September 9th at 535 Portwall. Donations can be dropped off curbside, and the most-needed items include canned ready-to-eat items with pull tops, particularly fruit and veggies, protein in pouches or pull-top cans, such as tuna, chicken, beef stew, and chili, peanut butter, energy snacks such as granola bars and breakfast bars. Also needed are non-food items such as toiletries, paper goods, diapers, and various cleaning supplies, such as mops, mop buckets, brooms, bleach wipes, bleach, garbage bags, and bug spray. To donate, or for more information, click here.

Additionally, blood supplies are almost always compromised during a crisis, and the calls go out for assistance both across the region and state. Carter BloodCare is one of the state’s largest blood centers, and they are always in need of donors. They provide patients in North, Central, and East Texas with over 300,000 units of blood and blood components every year. To donate, call (877) 571-1000, or click here.
